About Macondo

Started by backpackers. Still run like it.

Macondo is a family-run hostel in San Gil that has been welcoming backpackers, locals, adventurers and families for more than twenty years. It was started by travellers who love adventure, and it shows: the place is built for meeting people and forming groups for rafting, paragliding, bungee and hikes — and for disappearing into a hammock under the mango tree.

The team do the things they recommend: they raft, hike, bungee, cave, cycle and paraglide. That's why free, honest, up-to-date advice is the heart of the place — they connect you with guides they trust instead of selling you a package.

And because they've stayed in plenty of hostels themselves, they fixed the things that annoy travellers most: getting you checked in as soon as possible (and if not, free coffee and a hammock while you wait), free luggage storage — especially for hikers — and the use of bathrooms and common areas while you wait for a night bus.

What makes it different

  1. 1

Advice from people who do it

The team knows the rivers, the operators and which day is better for flying.

  2. 2

A garden in the middle of town

Mango, koi, a tiny plunge pool and hammocks to come back to.

  3. 3

    Kind small print

Early check-in when possible, free bag storage, bathrooms after check-out.

  4. 4

    People, not a party

Tejo Tuesday, group dinners, board games: social without being a nightclub.

  5. 5

    Honest by default

No AC, no breakfast, a small pool — said upfront.

The crew

We don't put names or invented bios on this site — come and meet them. Public reviews mention, again and again, how helpful the team is; the photos of the crew's own adventures come from Macondo's Instagram stories.

This is an independent preview site built for Macondo Hostel. Here's how the facts were handled:

From Macondo itself
Its LobbyPMS booking engine (conditions, rooms, descriptions and activity notes) and its own texts on Hostelworld, including LinkUp events.
Third-party listings
Hostelworld and Booking.com (beds, sizes, rules and ratings), always with platform and date.
Destination information
Alcaldía de San Gil, ProColombia (Colombia Travel), Satena and travel guides, cited where used.

Photos: Macondo's Instagram stories (supplied for this preview), room photos published by Macondo in its booking engine, and activity images published by Macondo (likely supplied by operators). Permission for production use is still to be confirmed with Macondo. Illustrations are original.

Where listings disagree (check-out time, children, twin-room capacity, founding year), the page says so instead of picking one.
