Life at Macondo

The garden

A mango tree, a koi pond, a tiny plunge pool and a wall of painted macaws — right in the middle of San Gil.

01

From above

Look down from the upper floor and the whole place makes sense: mango leaves (the young ones come in bronze-red), a wooden deck with loungers and a table, the coral MACONDO mural with its macaws, the small round plunge pool, and the koi pond tucked in below.

02

The pond

Lily pads, papyrus, a little fountain and orange-and-white koi. Macondo's own Instagram has a story called "Lunch time" featuring the koi, so they clearly know the routine.

Hover the pond. (It's a drawing — the real koi are in the photos.)

03

The plunge pool

Small. Really. Macondo's own listings call it a small plunge pool (and, in Spanish, sometimes a jacuzzi). It's for cooling off after a hot canyon day — not for swimming laps.

04

The mural

A coral wall painted with macaws, toucans and leaves that spells out MACONDO. The toucan perched on this website's logo is our nod to it.

05

Hammocks & slow mornings

Hammocks around the garden, yoga under the mango tree, coffee by the pond — and, the hostel says, regular visits from hummingbirds.

Quiet or social — your call

Quiet

  • A hammock and a book
  • Coffee by the pond before anyone's up
  • A dip in the plunge pool after the canyon
  • Private corners of the garden

Everyday things that make it easy

  • Garden, mango tree & hammocks
  • Small plunge pool
  • Koi & lily pond
  • Large guest kitchen
  • Free coffee
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Lockers

What the garden isn't

  • Not a pool club: the plunge pool is small.

  • No air-conditioning — rooms have fans.
  • Not a party hostel: social, yes; nightclub, no.
