Rafting the Río Fonce
San Gil's home river: whitewater right outside town, and the classic first raft.

Rafting the Río Fonce
WhereThe Río Fonce runs right through San Gil. According to the municipality, San Gil opened Colombia's first commercial rafting route here in 1996.
If you've never rafted, this is where San Gil usually starts you. The Fonce runs past town, the guides know its waves by heart, and the trip is short enough to be back for a hammock lunch — or out on a second adventure in the afternoon.
Macondo's activity notes call it the best-value family rafting around: a half-day on grade 2–3 rapids, with trips in the morning or the afternoon. Rivers change with the rain, so the guides make the call on the day.
Questions
Do I need experience?
Macondo's notes don't ask for any for the Fonce. You'll get a safety briefing and must follow the guide; water levels and your group decide the day.
Can kids go?
Macondo calls it its family rafting option, but minimum ages and conditions are set by the operator — ask with your kids' ages.
Fonce or Suárez?
Fonce for a half-day with lively rapids; Suárez for a full, much bigger day (grade 4–5). Plenty of people raft the Fonce first.
