Paragliding the Chicamocha Canyon
WhereThe Chicamocha canyon between San Gil and Bucaramanga — about 227 km long and close to 2,000 m deep, according to Colombia's tourism board.
A few running steps, then the ground simply stops and the canyon opens underneath you. Macondo's notes describe launching about 1,000 m above the river and circling up on thermals — sometimes to around 2,000 m.
You fly tandem with a pilot, and the hostel says its pilots offer longer flights — the notes mention 20–25 minutes. In paragliding, wind and weather decide everything: treat any time as a plan, not a promise.
Questions
What if the weather's bad?
Pilots only fly when it's safe. If your day isn't flyable, ask about another day or the shorter Las Vueltas flights.
Is there a cheaper option?
Yes — Macondo also lists shorter afternoon flights at Las Vueltas, outside the canyon but with views towards it.
