Canyon hikes

WhereThe canyon country of Santander, including the Chicamocha. Distance, heat and exposure vary a lot from route to route.

The photo comes from one of Macondo's own "join us for a canyon hike" stories: two hikers, a rock ledge and a very long way down. The crew here are hikers, and the hostel says it helps solo travellers find hiking buddies.

There's no fixed weekly hike on this site on purpose — routes, guides and difficulty depend on who's going and on the weather. Tell the team what kind of day you want (an easy viewpoint, a half-day, long and sweaty) and they'll suggest options and whether a guide makes sense.

Questions

Do I need a guide?

For many canyon routes, yes — trails can be unmarked, hot and remote. Ask which hikes the team would only do with a guide.

When should I start?

Early. Midday canyon heat is no joke — plan for shade and water.
