Camino Real: Barichara to Jordán

WhereFrom Barichara along the Camino Real via Guane and Villanueva, then down to Jordán on the Chicamocha river. Travel guides describe the full crossing continuing up to Los Santos.

The Camino Real is a network of old stone roads across Santander. Its famous short stretch runs downhill from Barichara to Guane; the long version keeps going, through Villanueva and down into the Chicamocha canyon to the tiny village of Jordán. The research behind this site mentions a three-day Barichara-to-Jordán route from Macondo's materials.

It's a real undertaking: travel guides describe roughly 1,000 m of canyon descent and climb, and 35–38 °C on the canyon floor. This isn't a product with a timetable — it's a conversation. Use the checklist below with the team before you commit.

Things to clarify first

  • How many days, and where does each day end?
  • Guide or self-guided?
  • Where to sleep along the way
  • Transport back to San Gil
  • Water and food stops
  • Whether your fitness matches the route

Questions

Can I do just the short part?

Yes — Barichara to Guane is a classic, easier walk. See the Barichara & Guane page.
