San Gil · Santander · Colombia20+ years of adventurers

Your basecamp for the unexpected

A little garden.A lot of adventure.

A family-run backpacker hostel in the middle of San Gil, Colombia's adventure capital. Hammocks, a koi pond and a tiny plunge pool to come home to — and a crew who raft, jump, cave and fly, and will point you to guides they trust.

The Original Tejo Tuesday

Chapter 1 · The garden

A garden in the middle of all the madness

Step through the door on Carrera 8 and San Gil turns into a garden. A mango tree throws shade over the hammocks, lily pads float on the koi pond, there's a small plunge pool, and a wall of painted macaws spells out the hostel's name. Read, do yoga under the mango tree, or just wait — someone always comes back from the river with a story.

Chapter 2 · Out there

The adventure begins here

San Gil is Colombia's adventure capital, and the people at Macondo actually do this stuff — they're rafters, hikers, bungee jumpers, cavers, cyclists and paragliders. Nobody sells you a package: they tell you what's good this week and connect you with guides they trust.

Chapter 3 · Tuesday night

The Tuesday you won't forget

Tejo is Colombia's national sport: you lob a heavy metal disc at a clay board and try to hit little paper packets of gunpowder that go off with a bang. Macondo says it started the first backpacker tejo night in the country — a mini tournament, new friends, and some weeks a trophy.

Some Tuesdays end like this.

Chapter 4 · Your people

Come alone. Leave with stories.

Macondo is social without being a party hostel. There are group dinners in the big kitchen, Catan rivalries, someone rounding up tomorrow's rafting crew — and quiet corners of the garden when you want them. Travelling solo? Tell the team; they'll help you find buddies for activities.

Chapter 6 · Your plan

What's your San Gil?

Pick a vibe, how long you've got and who's coming. We'll sketch a plan from real Macondo adventures that you can tweak, copy, or send to the team on WhatsApp.

1 Your vibe

a bit of everything

2 Your time
Add it and we'll put Tejo Tuesday on the actual Tuesday.
3 Your people

Answer the three questions and build a plan — it stays on this device until you send it.

The small print we're proud of

The details that matter

Free luggage storage

Hiking for days or catching a night bus? Your bags stay, free.

Early arrival?

You're checked in as soon as possible. If the room isn't ready: free coffee and a hammock.

After check-out

Keep using the bathrooms and common areas while you wait for your bus.

Real advice

The team knows the operators, the rivers, and which day is better for flying.

A big guest kitchen

No restaurant — the kitchen is the social hub. Cook, share, repeat.

Free lockers

Lockers for every guest, plus a safe in several private rooms.

Free Wi-Fi

For maps, messages and uploading the bungee video.

Right in town

About 0.7 km from San Gil's centre, by Hostelworld's estimate.

What we don't have

Straight from Macondo's own booking conditions, so nobody's surprised:

  • Air-conditioning — rooms have fans
  • Breakfast or a restaurant — there's a big kitchen
  • On-site parking — several affordable car parks nearby
  • TVs in the rooms — there's a TV room with Netflix
  • Pets — sorry, not accepted
